Anddddd We're back!!

Hello world =) Thanks for following us on Facebook- or rather, 'liking' us (please continue to do so). There have been a few changes made to the show. First, there is only one host of Local Radiation remaining- Aleks (formerly known as Wazoo) the other two are off venturing the world. Also, the show is now TWO whole hours long(Wednesdays 6-8pm)! That's something that people have been wanting to happen for a while.
As for the shows themselves, we've been getting a lot more interest from bands in coming into the studio and playing live sets. So for a while, the Local R calendar will be packed and we'll be getting some live action and let them do their thing.
Yesterday, we had Euro-Asia play. Next week, we will have Astari Nite come into the studio, not to mention a good amount of local music.

Radioboxer fights their way into LocalR's heart=)

Wednesday, Im outside of the studio, on the lookout for Vane and Jota Dazza of Radioboxer for our on air interview and acoustic set. Surely enough, I see Vanessa's lovely mane bouncing up and down as she and Jota make their way up the stairs of FIU's Graham Center. I wasn't greeted by the standard 'hey, what's up' and a hand shake but instead warm embraces from both parts of the lovely duo. That's what I think makes the band so amazing and why they have such an enormous following, they have limitless love to give. Radioboxer branded themselves as 'bi-polar pop' because sometimes their music is very soft and sentimental and sometimes it is on the harder side. Throughout the spectrum of this emotionally unstable set of songs, they are all filled with passion. While off the air and playing some Humbert, Lavola and others, we had great conversation which included the injuries that Vanessa gets during shows and the bald-spots that she gives Jota. Apparently she gets so intense during shows that she ends up getting tendonitis and ripping out Jota's hair out of passion.. or so she says.. When the two played their acoustic set, which included 'don't shoot at me' from their debut album, radiodrama, it was not only one of the most intimate musical experiences that I'd ever had the pleasure taking a part in, but they were just as good live as they are on their album.
During the show, we kept on announcing that we had two albums to give away to some lucky callers. For most of the show, not one call... but as soon as we went off air, the phone went off! There were a few disappointed fans who were too late and some who just called in to share their love and of course our two winners, Romney and Suzie who won a signed copy of their new album Magic City Ruse.
My point is, not only is this band great, but a great bunch with loving hearts and it was such a pleasure meeting them!
Stay tuned for a Local Radiation local music summer bash (with Radioboxer and of course, other great S FL bands) and keep it locked every Wednesday to hear all of our other guests give their all from our humble little studio at FIU.

Chilling with Mr. Feathers

I have to say this about Mr. Feathers: The man is much, much more mellow than the music he makes. While he chilled in the station and entertained us with his genuinely nice personality, his music made me want to break it doooowwwwnnnnn. If you like what you hear (and I'm pretty sure you will), make sure to check him out live. He'll be spinning tomorrow at the Awarehouse, Friday at BAR (for his album release party! WHAT!), and Saturday at EVE (which was White Room, but apparently that didn't sit well with someone). You owe it to yourself to check out this awesome local DJ, among other great music during this WMC week. Our comrade-in-arms and fellow Radiate FM member, DJ Two Way, the Ace of Bass, will be spinning Saturday at the same event as Mr. Feathers, so if you needed any extra incentive to head out, don't wait any longer. Did I mention that most of these events are FREE? :D

If you're not much of a night owl, you can bathe in the sweet sounds of Largopalooza this Saturday, starting around noon. Halfway to Moksha, When in Maine, and a host of other great local acts are all waiting for you to come aboard! The cover on the show is going to be $10 for those 12 and older (BABIES ARE FREE! Mr. Feathers Leaves the Nest...because he's on his way to Zorg fest!

Dear earthlings,

So from what Mr. Feathers has revealed to me, he will be performing at Zorg Fest (FRIDAY MARCH 11) at BAR and this is also his CD release party. Speaking of his CD release, his album- Galactic Trinity will be out March 8 (a Tuesday) and he will be playing at the Awarehouse on the 10th of March at 10pm.

Wednesday, which will be next Local Radiation, he may even stop by and talk about it... but we like to keep up the suspense.. so you have to tune in to see if he'll be there.

So! Don't be late for this very important date(s)!

FIGHT! FIGHT!.. Like Animals..

This past Wednesday we had band members Brett and Steve from band Fight Like Animals come on Local Radiation. This was the first time that we'd had a band do a live set, and I must say, this was very interesting, to say the least. We had this huge pedal board, amp, microphone-on-a-borrowed- sweater-on-the-floor set up.. the other stuff that it included, I do not remember. The live set went well and at 7pm the show ended... or so we thought. The very lovely, polite, and talented Jonathan Toubin was running a little late, so we got to further interview the band for another 45 minutes. We learned about how they got together, how long it took them to work on their album, the ins and outs of what it's like to be Fight Like Animals.

Well, I want to start off with my adventure in Ft Lauderdale. Amidst all the botox, boutique shops, rich bitches and over priced restaurants, I found some of Ft. Lauderdale's finest treasures.

I'd always wanted to go to Radio-Active Records .. for the most obvious (not to mention lame) reasons.. uhmm I work for a station called Radiate FM and they're Radio-Active.. I felt a sort of kinship with that store off the bat. But also, I'm always up for checking out a new music store, esp if it's right in my back yard. I must say, the store is more than I'd expected! They have a

great selection of both Records and Cd's , the atmosphere is great and they even have a little section for local music- which brings me to the purchases I'd made over there. The picture that you see in the left hand corner is the CD of Tumbleweave- they're a cartoon demon electron experimental rock band.. and their music id soo rad. I bought it pretty much because of the CD art (which is a limited-time edition) so it was a nice surprise to find out that they're good. The second CD that I bought was Jose El Rey's album. I'd been wanting it for a while. The music is mostly bass.. or Miami bass or whatever you'd like to call it. But either way, I couldn't pass up owning music by him. His lyrics are ridiculous and I love how he puts on an extra-strong Hispanic accent.. don't go swimming after you eat, or you will get the belly stress (from safety first)... that still cracks me up. Too bad he's on hiatus! Anyways, for coffee I went to

Brew in Ft Lauderdale. I love the

atmosphere and the coffee, not to mention. It's not as busy or corporate as Starbucks and I love that. The prices are reasonable and the employees are down to earth (don't mean to rag on SBUX employees though!). So if you are in the area and would like some brew, go to Brew!

FLEES FLEES THE SCENE!

You're far too late, dear reader. FLEES has left the scene of the crime!

The punk band came in, trashed the place, lit all the equipment on fire, etc. Eventually I woke up and met the actual band and thankfully, they were all much, much more pleasant people than I dreamed them up as. Just don't get on stage during their set tomorrow at the Monterey Club and you should be ok. I can't promise you that you'll get out unscathed, but hey, it can't hurt too bad, right? If you're still willing to check out this fervent punk band, along with some equally loud compatriots, you'll have to check The Monterey Club's website for directions and any additional information (not to mention drink specials, for those of you who have money for such luxuries).

Unfortunately, we didn't record this weeks shows (blame yours truly for not reminding DJ Wazoo). However, we kept up with everything we played, not including our FLEES interview which you will never have the chance of listening ever again! OH NO! To prevent such tragedies in the future, tune in to Local Radiation, Wednesdays from 6-7pm, any way you can and call in to remind us to record the show! Huzzah!

okay.. so for real.. this is going to be SUCH a bad ass show. I couldn't not talk about it! I'd never seen the Independents but I'd checked their stuff out and I know my horror punk and they are on point. Also, these guys describe themselves as 'psychobilly/ punk/ ska.' I don't know if you know what that means, but that means you're going to be having a good time. As for the other bands, I already know of MindYou and Jolly Badfellow and they have music worth listening to. I can only image what they are like live! As for these bands, Mindyou is indie/punk and I think that the best way I could describe them is 'airy punk' if that makes any sense to ya'll. And Jolly Badfellow, I'd like to think that they are more punk than anything but you can most definitely hear the swinging bass from time to time.

Okay so let's get down to the nitty gritty:

LOCALR daysleeper by LoveCloves

Another Wednesday, another great set of local music, this time featuring the post-punk, lo-fi sounds of DAYSLEEPER!

While the band has been active for well over a year and a half, it's current incarnation promises to produce more of the awesome music that you'll hear in today's show. And if you like what you hear (and I'm almost sure you will), you should definitely check them out live, Saturday, Feb. 12th, at the Awarehouse. The venue, located on 550 NW 29th ST, is pretty new, and by all accounts, it's been called "epic" and "REALLY FRIGGIN EPIC". The show's open to all ages, so there isn't any reason to miss out on the art, the culture, and the music. Come out and support your local scene and drown in the sweet sounds of DAYSLEEPER!

=I must say, the Annex is probably my favorite spot to hang out and listen to music.

Turnaround Sunshine had mentioned that they would be playing a show there, so my friend and I went to check them out. They are really good live. Despite only planning on staying to see Turnaround, we'd ended up staying for like 3 or 4 more bands. Not only is the music there great, but so are the people who go there. It's very chill and everyone, for the most part (minus this crazy old man who followed us around), is super nice. Th place itself is rather spectacular. It has a lovely stage and the oddest trinkets scattered throughout the place. They have a classroom setting on the side of the room, a man/animal thing flying out of the wall, scary clown heads, the word 'love', lamps... a COUCH!!! LOCAL RADIATION TIME SLOT CHANGE (again..)

Well, the moment we have all been waiting for (wanting..actually) has finally come!!
Yes ladies and gents, not only will Local Radiation be airing from 6 to 7pm every Wednesday, but we have tacked on an extra hour of local music extravagance!
Be prepared to listen to entire band EP's, live band interviews and of course, updated local playlists every single show for your listening pleasure!!!

so, in short, the new Local Radiation time slot is:

Yes, yes this is heart-breaking however... the following week (2/2/11) Flees, a local punk band, will be coming in. Art Basel 2009

Can you believe its here again?! I can't, and I am very excited, despite the fact that I forgot to mention it on the air. This is one of the coolest things about living in Miami, people. It is one of the biggest and most important art shows in the entire country.

Get out there and basel it up-

Art Basel takes place this week: December 3 through December 6!
Ask your favorite galleries or clubs if they're participating. There are TONS of free & cheap events featuring music, parties, and more art that are related to Art Basel going on in the city.

So, A Miracle Worker is a solo project of Miami student and philosopher-to-be, Rick Davila (click his name for a link to his blog). This is all electronic music made and recorded from home on his computer. He is currently out of Florida at school, and refuses to play shows locally. But, us gals at Local Radiaiton refuse to let his refreshing electro songs go unnoticed. Check out his songs here and on our show!

Miami Spice 2009

I went this weekend to a restaurant participating in the Miami Spice 2009 summer restaurant promotion. A 3-course dinner at a top restaurant for $35 during this recession is awesome.

Renowned chefs are cooking these affordable meals, and it is SO worth it. My boyfriend and I celebrated our one year anniversary this weekend, and guess what? We had an amazing, refined meal for a decent price (not an easy thing to achieve in Miami)! We love eating well, and we've been trying to save money by eating out less in general. But this was a special occasion, with great timing.

So, if you have any special occasions or just want to go somewhere nice with someone you love, check out the list of participating restaurants and make a reservation for lunch or dinner now! This amazing local promotion is only going on until September 30th.

Summer Lovin', Happened SO Fast

So, the local blog has been on a temporary hiatus. My turbulent summer: bronchitis/tonsillitis, Chicago for lollapalooza, Panama, work, and school for summer a,b, and c term made for an impossible blogging experience. Does this mean I wasn't attending local events? Heck no! Does this mean we, at local radiation, did not trudge on and continue having guests? Heck no, again!

Here are a few highlights of Summer with Local Radiation:

Local Rad Ladiezz

Despite our tireless efforts, getting bands in the studio was tough! DJ Poprocks was in Prague for a few weeks, I travelled a bit, worked, and had classes all summer, so we were absent and it was terribly sad. However, we still took some great imac photos in our studio, out of boredom and for the sake of showing our readers we're dedicated to entertaining you.

This adorable local artist showcased her paintings during Miami's celebrated Art Walk in the Design District this July. Fresh graduate of the Art Institute, her career is blossoming already. Check out her unique works: veronica-cabrera.com

The Real Easy

Caught these guys, while browsing at Sunset Place mall in South Miami, playing a free set in the Hot Topic store. The space was cramped, but they sounded pretty good. I scored a free cd and bumped into a new local band. Oh, the serendipity! It was fun. Their influences are big, ergo, so is their sound. I dig their psychedelic guitar riffs and energy. They're cultivating something that can become really popular. Check them out: The Real Easy on MySpace. Though, I would suggest catching a live show. MySpace recordings do them no justice.

Evan Mui

We have loved this guy since my boyfriend and I found his Demo in a pile of unknown cd's we had laying in the station (disclaimer: this pile no longer exists, we have reviewed everything and kept only the creme de la creme of local music). Please, check him out this instant: Evan Mui On MySpace. We tracked him down, stalked him a little, and finally had him in the studio live. I must tell you, this kid's voice is sweet as Elliot Smith's, accompanied by twangy southern sounds. Its great! By the way, his last name is pronounced "moy". I found out the hard way.

And there you have it, folks. That's a glimpse of Local Summer '09 in MIA. It was a good one. We'll be streaming our show on-line only for the next few weeks, the troubles of broadcasting college radio have sadly been actualized at Radiate FM... We'll be off the airwaves until further notice.

PLAID Party @ PS-14

On a dreadful-looking Saturday night, soaked bohemians and music fans alike sought refuge from the unrelenting rains of Miami at PS-14 Downtown. There they found an abundance of local artists ready to perform for them, whether soothing or energetic, until the wee hours of the following morning. The event is known as the PLAID party, a recurring live music party whereby attendees simply wear plaid clothing and get a discount on the price at the door. Not that the event needed an excuse, but if anyone were to ask for one then you’d tell them it was to bid farewell to “our local heroes” (as proclaimed by Pretty Please), The Jean-Marie. They’re about to embark on their out-of-Florida 2009 tour, along with Miami’s Indie queen, Rachel Goodrich.

Sirens & Sealions got things going with a set of folky tunes and enchanting harmonies that attracted casual attendants to the front of the stage, and set off a group of plaid clad lasses into what appeared to be a hoedown. With songs such as “Tumbleweed”, we all became aware that this young group of musicians will not remain openers for long. They continue to improve with every show. Various other local favorites such as Jesse Jackson and Pretty Please (PLAID party hosts), took the stage, but the band of the night was, after all, The Jeanmarie.

Personally, I believe there is no specific genre to entrap this eclectic, rambunctious band into. I’ll go ahead and label them “Indian rock”, thanks to the misinterpretation of a bouncer trying to explain to an elderly woman that The Jean-Marie was playing “indie rock”. Regrettably Jason, TJM’s drummer, was sidelined as he recently broke his finger just before going into the studio to record the follow up EP to their album “Annie Jump Cannon”. There was no need to panic, their percussionist, Geneva (who also plays with Rachel Goodrich), aptly filled in for him on the drums. So, as they have a tendency of doing, particularly in the absence of a fellow member, they experimented with their live show. They extended their songs and suddenly became a jam band; it seemed natural, and unpremeditated. To end their set they premiered a new song for the crowd. As good as it was then, I cannot wait to see them perform this song again when they come back, after it has been refined, developed, and cultivated. Plainly said, all around they treated the crowd with a fun and exciting show, as always, as they prepare to go off to such cities as Toronto, New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, to spread their brand of dancy, ruckus-causing rock.

I can't believe I never posted a blog about this show! In May at SWEAT Records we had an amazing night of local folk music.

These dapper lasses and lads get better with every performance. The sweltering heat didn't matter at all as these sea creatures belted out the songs kendall-ites are learning to adore. If you've made the mistake of not looking them up, now is the time: S&S on MySpace

Sweet and enchanting vocals and guitars make this Miami duo so very lovable. They took requests and made for a perfect close to the evening, particularly with "Black Night", which yes, is my favorite song. van*gloria, not vain-gloria

Thankfully, not all hurricanes are as severe as the ones that make headlines. Some of them are just torrential rainstorms overly-hyped by our local news castors, but we can't complain, days off of work and school give us creative projects like van*gloria!

Indie soul-rockers trained in some of South Florida's most prestigious music schools got together during a couple of '05 hurricanes and formed van*gloria. This 5 piece band is about to kick off their 2009 US tour, following their self-released album, "bluebird". (Frequently played on Local Radiation, particularly Track 5, "Miss Interstate", because I'm biased).

van*gloria was kind enough to come on our show and give us the scoop and a few laughs right before the big tour, which starts this weekend! Friday, May 15, van*gloria will be performing at The Vagabond. More info. can be found on their MySpace: van*gloria on MySpace.

Rachel Goodrich And a Few "Laughing Empanadas"

Miami's own acclaimed indie folk singer/songwriter, Rachel Goodrich dropped in our show today with Jeff and Geneva (as of today dubbed "laughing empanadas" due to their desire for hearty latin american cuisine and insatiable giggling), who are both talents shared between Rachel and Miami indie-pop sensations, The Jean-Marie.

"That's my giirrll!" exclaimed Local Radiation co-host, DJ Poprocks as she remembered the first time she saw Rachel play live. Now, we all know that Miami is a haven for artists and musicians alike, but there are some real gems out there, and Rachel Goodrich is one of the brightest. Her simple, goofy, and relatable lyrics, soft and sweet vocals, and inspired use of instruments combine for a great sound. I don't think I've met anyone who hears Rachel Goodrich and doesn't immediately like her, and eventually love her. Do yourselves a favor, check this Miami Indie-Queen out ASAP. Rest assured, her album "Tinker Toys" is available on iTunes and is one of our most played on Local Radiation.

Sirens & Sealions and Pure Imagination

Last night, local sweethearts Sirens and Sealions performed at the lovely Books & Books Cafe in Coral Gables. There's a beautiful open patio area where you can grab a delightful coffee and salad, sit outside with charming evening lighting, and of course, local entertainment! The band played new sultry songs and exhibited their growth as performers. A new drummer, Danny, and bassist, Jerry, have added a sort of completeness to the band's already melodious and fun folk-rock style. You can listen to S&S whenever you want on their myspace website, and of course, listen to them on Local Radiation!

Matt Gajewski, guitarist for Sirens and Sealions, also performed separately from S&S. He read one of his whimsical, painfully familiar, and utterly hilarious short stories. Matt reads his short stories live, set to a backdrop of impromptu music, this time performed by Yannick Calleiro of yet another local band, Bear9. Matt's live readings are best known as Pure Imagination, which is the name of his radio show on WVUM.

Nick Deluca, lead guitarist for S&S also played some improv music in between the two acts with some friends, including Joe Rehmer. They totally sounded rehearsed, but it was indeed all jamming. There were even some folks asking what their band name was and if they'd like to perform again. That's what you get when you have a bunch of local and charming talented lads together playing their hearts out. Great stuff, be sure to catch Nick's improv jams at the next Sirens and Sealions show (here's hopin').

Nimencia in the house!

Local rockers Nimencia graced our studios with their presence today. Marcos (guitar) and Roger "Maget" (vocals) played a live acoustic session of an unfinished song of theirs! Nimencia's first studio album, "Trip to Motherland" is available on iTunes and is exemplary of the band's diverse range in rock styles. Its a great blend of grunge, punk, and experimental, always pleasing to the ear.

So, REV Miami 2 was kickass.

From the sick rhymes of La Guardia and ArtOfficial (who rocked that house, no lie) to the dance-inspiring The Jean-Marie (check them out under our "Local Links") and the adorable Jacob Jeffries Band, the performances were just perfect. Nothing better than getting to see the diverse range of talented musicians Miami has to offer.

The crowd was great, set against a backdrop of some amazing artists flaunting their stuff at different tables.

Bear9 & Buckaroo Bonsai at FIU Frost Art Museum

Bear9 performed with Buckaroo Bonsai, Wednesday February 25 at FIU Frost Art Museum. The performance was indoors, during Target Wednesday After Hours, which the Frost hosts every week.

Buckaroo Bonsai opened up, a 2 man band of Julian Squares, check them out on myspace: www.myspace.com/juliansquares. They sound a bit like The Strokes and are a fun toe-tappin' experience.

And then there was Bear9, which actually currently consists of about 7 "bears". The band's distinct indie-rock style combines a lot of fun instrumentality (whistling, xylophone, and a lot of tambourine) with heavy lyrics, some laden with metaphor and personal meaning, and in some songs a very relatable melancholiness. Guest bears playing: Nick Deluca of ; Sirens & Sealions, John Olin of Postmail on keys and vocals, and other friends of the band, Eli on the drums, and Flor Diaz vocalizing. The band gave out demos for donations, sold bear hoodies for their homeless fund, Bears Without a Cave, and rocked the heck out of that museum.

This is a new blog for a new Local Radiation. We're working hard to be your source for all things happening in the South Florida area. Our specialty is finding musicians who are locally based (even if they are currently living elsewhere) and playing their music on the air! Also, we're delving deep into the cultural and music scene in Miami to bring you talented folks who will be making it big. Tune in to Local Radiation weekly for what's happening and where its happening, from local music shows, to art shows, release parties, and more. We'll be having musical guests in for interviews as often as possible and you can check our blog frequently for information on your favorite local bands and shows.
